"Satyamev jayate":Truth alone triumphs

He says,i ought to be told
why the country is floating down
the gutter while we stand over and piss in it

"Satyamev jayate" is a new hit Indian tv show anchored and produced by bollywod star Aamir Khan. The show as the host claims is an eye opener to the ugly side of the nation. From rape to child molestation, from bribery to dowry everything will be presented with victims, their real life stories with real tears quite possibly leading to the public sincerely empathizing with them for atleast that one hour of broadcasting. The show has made waves  albeit, the sound and electronic ones on projectors and between the transmitters.

The name of the show heralds from mantra 3.1.6 from the Mundaka Upanishad

satyameva jayate nānṛtaṁ
satyena panthā vitato devayānaḥ
yenākramantyṛṣayo hyāptakāmā
yatra tat satyasya paramaṁ nidhānam

translated as

Truth alone triumphs; not falsehood.
Through truth the divine path is spread out by which
the sages whose desires have been completely fulfilled,
reach where that supreme treasure of Truth resides.

The common man watches the show, dumbfounded by its stark and stubborn honesty in eliciting from victims themselves their own stories as a studio full of people wipe their tears and the host cuts a figure of misery and pain. What is surprising ,to put it delicately is the fact that such information or shall we say facts are printed, published and presented in the crudest and simple manner across the country's news channels and print media,to which the public turns a blind eye.The conscience depraved society of the country has become so hung over the reality tv show mentality and the glitterati of the well known or the well kept, that it has become essential for everyone to identify every aspect of life through them.It is a pity that the people want to watch the pretty faces show the ugly sides as they grow prettier by the day and the ugly keep becoming us.

You know who is an honest man,
he who doesn't mind his galoshes getting wet

  1. Can't agree anymore, affirmation from a paid mouth, that probably hasn't and never will taste this shit, creating a wave only proves how weak we are as consciences and a society

  2. An excerpt from The Soul of Man Under Socialism--

Misery and poverty are so absolutely degrading, and exercise such a paralysing effect over the nature of men, that no class is ever really conscious of its own suffering. They have to be told of it by other people, and they often entirely disbelieve them. What is said by great employers of labour against agitators is unquestionably true. Agitators are a set of interfering, meddling people, who come down to some perfectly contented class of the community, and sow the seeds of discontent amongst them. That is the reason why agitators are so absolutely necessary. Without them, in our incomplete state, there would be no advance towards civilisation. Slavery was put down in America, not in consequence of any action on the part of the slaves, or even any express desire on their part that they should be free. It was put down entirely through the grossly illegal conduct of certain agitators in Boston and elsewhere, who were not slaves themselves, nor owners of slaves, nor had anything to do with the question really. It was, undoubtedly, the Abolitionists who set the torch alight, who began the whole thing. And it is curious to note that from the slaves themselves they received, not merely very little assistance, but hardly any sympathy even; and when at the close of the war the slaves found themselves free, found themselves indeed so absolutely free that they were free to starve, many of them bitterly regretted the new state of things. To the thinker, the most tragic fact in the whole of the French Revolution is not that Marie Antoinette was killed for being a queen, but that the starved peasant of the Vendee voluntarily went out to die for the hideous cause of feudalism. pouvoir de la pensée,

I do not see how Aamir Khan getting paid for this show worsens the whole idea. I do not expect anyone to work for the betterment of society "for free". The fact that our Indian society has embraced Aamir Khan and not the hundred other social workers is of course unsettling. But if the show manages to work wonders I do not see .. how could that be a problem.

  3. Bhai ofcourse that is not the problem..The problem is in the intellectual interpretation of the indian society of the show...To people ,we know consider this an hour of 'serious' entertainment..If someone tells me aamir khan is making the masses "aware" of the degrading nature of our society then it is laughable as you are trying to educate society about society..it's like teaching a fish to swim..i can bet you it is not the state of the country we are watching ..it is aamir khan depicting the state of the country..our loyalties are not tested because we 'will' always fail...As is so aptly put by Oscar Wilde...

  4. I once believed the truth would set me free. I let my ugly self out and loose among the reproach of everyone who looked at it. I'm not sure I believe it now...or should I say my interpretation of it. I am still bound. I am not free...in the sense of "care not". I will always care. My truth hurts. Could it ever be any different when truths collide?

  5. Aditya, "the very unsettling fact" is at the crux of my grudge, not against the chosen medium or the person, but against the idea of seeing guilt and crime through his eyes because most of us prefer a life of denial and ignorance or maybe are too lazy too resist and hence seek salvation through his efforts.
